The Timeless Appeal of Sports Pennants

Pennants have been around for centuries, originally used by the nautical world and later adopted by the sports world. Vintage pennants, often made of felt with bold lettering and simple graphics, bring a sense of nostalgia that make them a beloved piece of sports memorabilia.

My son started playing little league baseball 5 years ago. (For more fun baseball content like this don’t miss these Baseball goodie bags) Every year I order a vintage sports pennant for his baseball team. These pennants tell the story of his baseball journey—each one representing a different season, team, and memories we cherish. Instead of keeping them tucked away, I wanted to create a sports pennant garland to display them in his room.

Supplies You’ll Need

Making a no-sew sports pennant garland is a simple, high impact project. Here’s everything you’ll need:

  • Sports Pennants – Whether they’re from your child’s teams, favorite pro teams, or vintage finds, choose ones that are meaningful to your son and family. Tip: Etsy has the best collection of vintage sports pennants. I usually search “Vintage (team name) pennant” and get great results. Another fun idea is to check this list of World Series winners and find a pennant from the year their favorite team won.
  • Double-Sided Fabric Tape – This will secure the pennants to the ribbon without causing damage.
  • Quality 2-Inch Grosgrain Ribbon – This serves as the base of your garland. Choose a neutral color or one that complements the pennants.
  • Measuring Tape – To ensure even spacing and the right garland length for your space.
  • Scissors – For cutting the ribbon and tape as needed.
  • Clothespins or Binder Clips (Optional) – These can help hold the pennants in place while assembling.
  • Command Hook stickers

How to Make a No-Sew Sports Pennant Garland

Follow these easy steps to assemble your garland without any sewing required:

  1. Measure and Cut the Ribbon – Lay out the ribbon next to the measuring tape for the desired length. Pull the center of the ribbon back to create a swag. Cut it to size, leaving about 1 foot extra on each end for hanging. Cut the ends at an angle for a clean look!
  2. Lay Out the Pennants – Arrange the sports pennants in the order you want them to appear on the garland. Space them evenly along the ribbon to ensure a balanced look.
  3. Attach with Double-Sided Fabric Tape – Apply strips of double-sided fabric tape along the top edges of each pennant. Press the pennants firmly onto the ribbon and hold pressure for about a minute. If you are using the binder clips or clothes pins, clip them on at this time to help create a firm hold.
  4. Hang and Enjoy – Once everything is secure, hang the garland using the Command Hook stickers. Great locations include above their bed, desk, or along a wall to showcase their collection of sports memories.
