Unforgettable Kid’s Talent Show Ideas:

Talent shows are a fun way to showcase children’s creativity, hard work, and abilities. They are a common and loved event in many elementary schools. Talent shows are also a fun addition to summer camps or family reunions. They are the perfect platform for kids to share their skills and interests with their community. Here are some fun talent show ideas for kids and tips for parents!

Planning a Talent Show:

Organizing a kids’ talent show definitely takes some planning. Start by selecting a date, location, and volunteers.  Depending on the number of children interested in participating, a tryout or screening process may be needed.

While planning a talent show consider the following:

  • Timing: Determine the length of each act, then add in a few moments in between for transitions. A time limit or cuts may be needed if there are a lot of students interested in participating.
  • Props: Students may need various props including musical instruments, sports equipment, gymnastics mats, etc. These should be organized backstage.
  • Sound/ Lighting: Background music, microphones, and spotlights can enhance a talent show. These elements should be organized and rehearsed before the show.
  • Programs: Audience members love to see who is performing a description of the night’s acts.
  • Spread the word:: Let your community know about the talent show through a school newsletter or social media.

A Great Start

Lead the National Anthem or Pledge

One way to open your event is by having a child lead the national anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance. This can set a respectful tone for the event and get the audience involved. It’s also a great opportunity for kids interested in public speaking or singing to shine!

Talent Show Ideas for Kids

1. Play a Musical Instrument

Encourage kids to showcase their musical skills by performing on an instrument they’re learning. Whether it’s the piano, guitar, violin, or even the ukulele, a musical performance is always a crowd-pleaser. Children can perform a solo or collaborate with others for a group number.

2. Tell Jokes

Telling jokes can be a great talent show act for children who have a knack for comedic timing. Kids can recite their favorite jokes.  Last year at our talent show, two boys told a few of their favorite jokes and the whole crowd laughed. They even wore tuxedo T-shirts which added to the humor!

Tip: Have students write down the jokes they plan to tell. Age-appropriate or “dad joke” books are a great place to start.

3. Sports Skills Showcase

Does your child excel in sports? A sports skills showcase is a perfect way to highlight their athletic abilities. Kids can demonstrate basketball tricks, soccer dribbling, or gymnastics routines. A sports skill showcase can add energy and variety to the show.

4. Sing a Song

Singing is one of the most popular talent show acts for kids. Whether performing a solo or a duet, singing allows kids to display their vocal talents. You can have children sing popular songs from their favorite artists or even showcase original songs.

5. Perform a Magic Trick

Magic acts always bring an element of surprise and fun to any event. If you have a child who is interested in magic, encourage them to perform a few tricks, whether it’s making things disappear or performing card tricks. Kids can also use props like scarves, hats, and boxes to perform their illusions. This is a fun way to get the crowd involved too!

6. Dance with Friends

Dancing is a fun and energetic way to showcase talent. Kids can perform solo, in pairs, or in small groups. Whether it’ship-hop or ballet, dancing is a great option for kids who love movement. You could even organize a dance battle or a flash mob, where several children surprise the audience with a coordinated routine.

A classic talent show idea is to do a group dance.

7. Poetry Reading

A poetry reading can be a thoughtful and creative talent show act for those who enjoy language arts. Kids can recite poems from famous poets or read original works. This is a fantastic way for children to explore their literary creativity while building confidence in speaking in front of an audience.

8. Yo-Yo Tricks

Yo-yoing is a classic skill that kids love to perform. If you have a young yo-yo master in the group, they can show off their tricks, like “the sleeper” or “walk the dog,” or even create their own routine to music. One of our favorite acts from last year was a first-grade boy who performed yo-yo tricks to music with a few friends acting as his “hype men” by dancing in the background.

9. Juggle

Juggling is another classic talent show act that crowds love! Children who have practiced juggling with balls, scarves, or rings can impress the crowd with masterful hand-eye coordination.

10. Perform a Skit

A short skit is a fun way to bring humor and creativity to the stage. You can encourage kids to write their own skits or choose from a library of kid-friendly scripts.

11. Karate or Martial Arts Demonstration

If you have a child who practices karate, taekwondo, or another form of martial art, they can showcase their skills with a demonstration. This could involve demonstrating basic moves or even putting together a short routine. Students will enjoy showing off their special martial arts attire and belts.

12. Perform a Science Experiment

Kids who love science can incorporate that into their talent show act by performing a simple science experiment. Create a small volcano eruption with baking soda and vinegar or make slime. Both of these have a big visual impact. Just make sure the stage crew is ready for cleanup!

13. Cheerleading Routine

A cheerleading routine can be a high-energy, group act. Kids can perform cheer routines with pom-poms, chants, and stunts. At a school talent show, this is a great way to show school camaraderie and pride!

14. Highlight Your Culture

Talent shows are a great opportunity for kids to share their heritage and culture. Encourage children to perform traditional dances, songs, or cultural stories. Whether it’s a folk dance, song, or cultural dress showcase, it’s a beautiful way for kids to express who they are.

15. Jump Rope Tricks

Jump rope tricks are another fun way to showcase agility and coordination. Single jumps or double Dutch can showcase kids’ skills. Add a creative twist by incorporating a song or acrobatic element to keep the audience engaged.

Other Ways to Get involved

In addition to performing, kids can get involved in the talent show by helping with different aspects of the event. One great option is to host an Art Show outside the auditorium. This gives children who prefer visual arts a chance to display their paintings, drawings, or sculptures. Artists can welcome

The MC (Master of Ceremonies) plays a key role in keeping the show flowing smoothly. This role is great for enthusiastic students who enjoy acting or public speaking. The MCs can introduce each act and provide entertainment between acts.

Stage management or “stage crew” is another essential role for students.  These hardworking talent show members make sure props are ready and in position for each act. Stage crew is a fun opportunity for students who want to be part of the talent show experience, but not out front performing.
