What Flowers to Purchase for a Dance Recital

There are many flowers that can easily be made into a beautiful small bouquet for a dancer. You choose based on the dancer’s favorite color or flower. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, there are a few flowers that have become popular choices over the years due to their beauty, symbolism, and availability.

1. Roses are perhaps the most traditional flower for a dance recital bouquet, and for good reason. Known for their elegance and beauty, roses are a symbol of admiration and respect.

2. Carnations are another popular choice, particularly because of their versatility and availability. They come in a wide range of colors, including pink, red, white, and yellow, each carrying a different meaning. Carnations are also relatively affordable, making them a good option for large recital gift-giving.

3. Lilies are known for their delicate beauty and symbolism of purity and refined beauty. Their large, showy blooms can make a dramatic impact, which is perfect for dancers who have put in extra effort to shine on stage.

4. Peonies are a symbol of good luck and one of the most elegant flowers. Even one studding bloom has a big impact in a dance recital bouquet.

5. Baby’s Breath (Gypsophila) Baby’s breath is often used as a filler flower to add a soft, delicate touch to any bouquet. These tiny, white blooms symbolize everlasting love and purity. When paired with other flowers like roses or lilies, baby’s breath enhances the overall beauty of the bouquet while giving it a light, airy feel.

Supplies You’ll Need

If you have Trader Joe’s in your area, their flower selection and price cannot be matched. I’ve also had good luck at other grocery stores or Costco. In addition to flowers, you will need the following supplies to create a beautiful and durable bouquet to take to the recital.

  • Floral wire/ Tape/ Rubber Bands: something to secure the stems together and ensure the bouquet holds its shape.
  • Paper Towels: a damp paper towel will keep the stems moist during the recital.
  • Saran Wrap: to wrap around the paper towels can create a waterproof barrier.
  • Brown Craft Paper: as a wrap for the bouquet.
  • Ribbon or fabric: to add a decorative touch.
  • Scissors or pruning shears: to trim the stems and make sure everything is the right length.

How to Assemble the Bouquet

Creating a dance recital bouquet is not only a thoughtful way to celebrate a dancer, but can also be a fun and creative project. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to assembling a beautiful and memorable bouquet:

Cut stems of dance recital flowers.

Step 1: Prepare the Flowers Start by trimming the stems of your flowers to the desired length, usually about 8-10 inches. Remove any excess leaves or foliage from the lower part of the stems. If you’re using greenery or filler flowers like baby’s breath, trim those as well.

Step 2: Create the bouquet: Choose one central flower, such as a large rose, lily, or peony, to serve as the focal point of the bouquet. Place it in the center of your working area. Layer in smaller flowers and greenery.

Wrapping materials for dance recital flowers include damp paper towels, clear plastic wrap, and butcher or tissue paper.

Step 3: Lay out wrapping materials: Lay out the Wrapping Supplies. Start with a damp paper towel (to keep the stems moist for transport and during the recital). Next, add a small sheet of clear plastic wrap. Use butcher paper or colorful tissue paper as the decorative wrap around the flowers.

Step 4: Secure the Stems Use floral wire or the rubber bands to bind the stems together. Wrap the wire around the stems tightly but gently to hold them in place.

Step 5: Wrap the bouquet: Fold the Paper Around the flowers

Step 6: Embellish the bouquet: Finally, wrap the bouquet with a ribbon or decorative fabric. There are also many fun pennants, picks, or other embellishments that make the bouquet extra special.
