It’s a perfect opportunity for family bonding, soaking up some sun, and playing outside with friends. As a mom parenting in a tech consumed world, the pool can actually feel like a reprieve from screen time negotiations! However, any mom knows, a pool day with kids isn’t as simple as grabbing your swimsuit and heading out the door. To ensure a smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free experience, there are several pool bag essentials that will set you up for a more relaxing day. Here’s a guide to pool essentials for mom’s!

1. Sun Protection
Sunscreen
One of the most important pool essentials for moms is high-quality sunscreen. Look for broad-spectrum, mineral based protection with an SPF of at least 30. Ensure it’s water-resistant, as the kids will be in and out of the water all day. Apply generously before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. Please discuss sunscreen use and choice with your pediatrician especially for babies under 6 months.
Sun Hats and Rash Guards
While sunscreen is the best option while swimming, there is really no substitute for the physical protection of a hat or rash guard. Hats with wide brims provide excellent protection for your face and neck, while rash guards offer additional coverage for your children’s delicate skin. These items are especially helpful during peak sun hours when UV rays are the strongest.
Sunglasses
Don’t forget a pair of UV-blocking sunglasses for both you and the kids. Sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful rays and reduce glare, making it easier to keep an eye on your little ones.
2. Pool Gear for the Kids
Swim Diapers
For moms with babies or toddlers, swim diapers are a must. They are designed to withstand water while containing any accidents, making them essential for pools. There are great disposable or reusable options. Always pack a few extras, as they will need to be changed frequently.
Floats and Life Jackets
If you can only do one thing at the pool with you kids this summer, it should be to make sure they are safe in the water. Every summer, there are tragic stories of pool or water related accidents or near misses involving children. There are many layers to ensuring your child is safe in the water. If you could only bring one pool essential as a mom, a flotation device should be it! Ensure you have age-appropriate floatation devices. Always supervise your children closely, even when they’re wearing floatation aids.
Pool Toys
I’m not quite sure why, but is seems that any toy we bring to the pool feel much more fun! Anything from a Barbie doll to a tennis ball gets new life at the pool! Keep the kids entertained with a selection of pool toys (or your regular toys from home!) A water football, dive through rings, and or reusable water balloons can provide hours of entertainment for kids and hours of reading for moms! Choose toys that are appropriate for your child’s age and swimming ability to ensure safe play.
3. Comfort and Convenience
Poolside Chairs or Lounge Chairs
If the pool you go to has chairs just keep scrolling. If it doesn’t, you know that comfortable seating is important for moms who will spend much of their time poolside. Look for lightweight, foldable chairs that are easy to transport and set up.
Towels and Blankets
Pack plenty of large, absorbent towels for drying off after swims. A large blanket or beach mat is also useful for creating a comfortable area for sitting, eating, or taking a break from the water. These quick drying towels are our favorite !
Waterproof Bag
A waterproof bag is so helpful for storing wet swimsuits and towels. This helps keep the rest of your belongings dry and organized.
4. Hydration and Snacks
Water Bottles
Even though you and your kids are surrounded by water getting dehydrated at the pool is easy to do! Bring enough water for the whole family. Insulated, glass-free water bottles can keep your drinks cool for hours, making them a great choice for a long day out.
Healthy Snacks
Despite my best intentions to say healthy during the summer, treat find their way to pools! It always seems that the ice cream truck rolls by just as we’re leaving the pool or someone brings treats to share with friends. To curb blood sugar spikes (and meltdowns!) pack a variety of healthy snack. Fresh fruit, veggie sticks, granola bars, and sandwiches are all great options. All my favorite packable sports and pool snacks are here!
Cooler
A small cooler can keep your snacks fresh and your drinks cold. Look for a portable, lightweight option that is easy to carry. Some coolers come with wheels and handles, making transportation a breeze.
5. First Aid and Hygiene
First Aid Kit
No matter how many times kids hear, “No running!” the excitement of the pool usually ends with a slip or a scrape at some point. Accidents can happen, so it’s wise to have a basic first aid kit on hand. Include items like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and any necessary medications. Having these supplies readily available can help you handle minor injuries quickly and efficiently.
Hand Sanitizer and Wipes
With kids around, spills and messes are inevitable. Hand sanitizer and wipes are essential for quick clean-ups and maintaining hygiene, especially if you’re bringing snacks or lunch to the pool.
Extra Clothes
Pack a change of clothes for each child for a dry and cozy ride home! Do’n’t forget underwear! If you time it right, a long pool day and warm, dry clothes might result in a nap on the ride home!
6. Entertainment and Relaxation
Books or Magazines
If you have reached the magical time in motherhood where reading a book or a magazine by the pool is an option- way to go! While the kids are playing, you might be able to unwind and get some much-needed me-time.
Music and Speakers
If you pool allows it, nothing turns a pool day into a pool party like great music. Portable, waterproof speakers can provide the soundtrack to your pool day. Just be mindful of the volume to ensure you’re not disturbing others.
Shade Options
Spending all day in the sun can be exhausting. Bring an umbrella, canopy, or pop-up tent to create a shaded area where you and the kids can take breaks from the sun. This helps prevent overheating and sunburn.
7. A Great Bag Carry it all
Now that you have all your pool essentials for moms, you just need a great bag to hold it all! There are so many bags out there that will do the job for getting things back and forth to the pool. My Favorites are the Bogg Bags or Scout Bags. Please check back soon for review of more pool bag options!
Conclusion
While I have listed some what I consider to be pool essentials for moms and linked specific items that I love, the most important thing about packing your summer pool bag is that is works for your family! You may have a snack bar at your pool and not need snacks. You may have younger children or babies so changes of clothing and baby food or milk /formula are your top priorities! The best pool and and most important pool bag essentials are the ones that serve your family!
